A traveling wave comes from a string of unit density (red) and enters a region of 4 (middle) and 16 (bottom) times higher linear density. The increment in density translates in a slowing down of the propagation speed by factors of 2 and 4 respectively. The change in density also implies wave reflections at the interface. The top panel is just what the wave looks like in a uniform density string.
