I started having fasciculations in January 2009. This video was taken on may 11th 2009. This is the longest "attack" I've had so far. It started in the middle of the night and lasted for about 30 minutes.
I have them all over my body:
foot arches, arms, legs, back, shoulders, hands/fingers, butt, face(rarely).

I also have been experiencing other symptoms (dizziness, chills, headaches, weakness in some muscles, paresthesias, tremor in abs and fingers, etc, etc ..)

Update (june 27 2009)
Needles to say I've been freaking out for months already that I might be developing some kind of neurologic disease (e.g MS, ALS, PD, etc).
Doctors have been quite useless so far and I guess seem to think I'm just another hypochondriac/hysteric type who has been reading neurology stuff on wikipedia for too long (which I have to admit I have done a lot).

Have had a clean MRI of brain on march.
a negative Lyme/Borreliosis test on april
And tons of normal blood tests (CBC, thyroid, B12, etc. )

Last neuro prescribed me an antidepressive! (cymbalta) cause she seems to think I'm having some kind of anxiety disorder (?). Of course I have anxiety! but because of the symptoms! (or at least that's what I think). One thing is for sure, I'm not taking that shit.

Anyways, If you have similar symptoms or have any ideas please let me know.

  • Wow.

I'm starting to develop this, along with foot numbness(usually my left foot).. should I be worried? It lasts no more than a minute or so.

  • I have noticed that my limbs go numb (fall asleep way more often/easier than they used to). Not sure if this is what you mean with numbness.

No idea if you should be worried. Actually I don't know if I should either.

I've been having this for 8 months already and still ok (or mostly)

    good luck

  • Please go and have your pH level checked to see if you have alkalosis or acidosis. Also, have your potassium checked. You may have either hypokalemia (decreased potassium level) or hyperkalemia (elevated potassium level). In either situation you develop cardiac arrhythmias which leads to cardiac arrest. Don't play with this, demand to be tested for this by your doctor. Please report back, I will watch for your post. This is very serious.

  • I had a potassium test on february '09 and it was normal 4.1mmol/L. I had another on august and was also normal 4.4mmol/L .

Asked about the PH level test and the GP didn't think it was relevant. She did prescribe magnesium pills and have been taking them for more than a month and since then my twitches seem to have decreased in intensity and frequency. No idea if the magnesium had anything to do with it, GP didn't really have/give any explanations.

Thanks a lot for the help.

  • One other thing... have you had an EMG, and MRI? The other test that is a sure thing is a lumbar puncture.. spinal tap. It might give you real peace of mind to get one. They aren' t that bad. Will rule out everything..

If you don't have muscle wasting you are OK...your other symptoms are strange but they dont sound like ALS

  • Haven't had an EMG, but I did get a brain MRI (had to convince the dr to order it). Supposedly clean. Also both neurologists I saw pretty much treated me like a hypochondriac and didn't seem concerned about my symptoms. The first one suggested I relax and go get a massage(?). The other an antidepressant (which I never took).

I guess If i had ALS I would be on a wheelchair, or at least would show more obvious signs by now (or so I like to think)...

  • look up depersonalization you may have it

  • Your B12 level can be "normal", but what's normal for one person may not be normal for another. A more accurate test is a urine MMA level. Google for more info, also check out the book "Could it Be B12"....

  • ILADS . org

  • The lyme bacteria morph from spirochete to inter/intracellular and even cyst form so can evade blood test detection. LIke I mentioned, 3 negaitive tests over several years before I finally got my positive. My fasciculations started in my calf and moved to both calves, then up my legs. I now get them all over but antibiotics have helped a lot...been on 1.5 years.

  • Negative tests for Lyme/borrelia are a crock. You need a Lyme litererate md. The lyme bacteria morph from spirochete to inter/intracellular and even cyst form so can evade blood test detection. • This is lyme disease. I had same thing and went undiagnosed by many neurologist. Wish I knew then what I do now.

  • Have your Thyroid gland checked. I have these, too, and have many other symptoms of a Thyroid problem. I went to the ER for my muscle twitches (mine started on the right side of my face. I was told it was stress...perhaps a potassium deficiency. They gave me a muscle relaxer. I wasn't pleased with that, so I did some looking around on my own, and I'm convinced I have a Thyroid issue. I am a guy, and men DO have Thyroid issues.

  • I have fasciculations everywhere, all over my body. : )

  • ilove fasciculations

  • 8 mins is along time when i have fasciculations, they usually last a few seconds or up to a minute or 2
