Why the hell did I get a dog, Joe wondered. He was in no conditions to raise a dog. He was not emotionally stable to be able to do so. Jensen had noticed Joe finally was gaining his artistic abilities again. Joe even began to smile, the most rarest thing, like rain in the San Fernando valley. Winston followed him everywhere, like Mary Bo Peep and her sheep. Winston had a morning routine of waking up Joe by licking his face which was his way of begging to go for a walk.
-----------------------
He heard a whine coming from his new blue bulldog and believed it was cause he needed his afternoon walk. Grabbing his leash, Joe and Winston headed outside. Midway through their walk, a shiht-zu came up to Winston and Joe first thought they would fight but they just stayed there looking at each other.
"BELLA!" Joe heard an all too familiar voice say. "Oh my goodness, Bella! Don't you dare run away from me agai---Joe. Oh I see you have Winston."
"I see you looked into Winston's files to find out my name and Winstons'." She let a small giggle leave her lips as he smiled, an expression that was so rare coming from him. "Aren't you suppose to take care for dogs, not lose them. It's like everytime I see you, you're running after a dog." He also let a chuckle out.
"Hey, it's only been twice, okay?" they both laughed, a harmonic melody. "You wanna walk together?" He nodded. How did he agree so easily? He would have shut her out by now. They walked along the park as they let their dogs off their leashes and continued as the sun was setting.
"So your dog..uhh," he paused as she responded with saying Bella. "Right Bella, another dog you walk for the shelter?" he asked as she shook her head.
"No she is my dog. Animal lover...I bet you think I'm some crazy cat lady." She said as he laughed while they both sat on a bench letting the dogs run around.
"No, not at all. Just a crazy dog lady," she pushed him as he laughed. "I'm kidding....so...uhh the lady at the front desk...Maria I think, she said that you were sweet to volunteer since you have a lot of personal problems."
"Oh, right..."
"You don't have to tell me. I was just—"
"No its fine. I don't mind. My father is a drunk and he well, its all he does. My mother has not been in the picture for as long as I remember. And I have no siblings so its just me having to take care of him. But, he is currently in rehab. Let's see if he does change. So what about you? What's your story? I know you have one."
"Sorry, didn't mean to have you bring up something you wouldn't like. Me? Well..." she grabbed his hand encouraging him to continue. "I just lost my mother to cancer. Same like you, I have no siblings and my dad passed away when I was younger. Now....I have no one." By now, they were both walking again not being able to sit while they poured out their stories. She grabbed his hand once again as they continued to walk.
"Well, now you do," she stated.
"Maria is right...you do have a pure heart." She blushed not being accustomed to compliments. Thank god it was almost night fall. They
both discovered more things about one another. The fact of how she juggled two jobs and being a volunteer, his struggle of becoming a photographer. Both with difficult lives, but they never let the negative get to them. They still continued hand in hand.
"I'm sure you will find your inspiration to be able to have that spark to your photos again. Art is not given, it's just free of expression." She said as she observed the camera around his neck. She bent down as both dogs came to her and played with her. And there it was, the sun drowning into the ocean casting a silhouette on the three of them and Joe finally saw the inspiration he needed. He captured that moment without them knowing.
"Winston...Lets go boy." The dog whined as if he understood what he was saying. "Yes, dude. It's time to go home. You need a bath." The dog whined even more. Demi stood up and walked closer to him.
"Well, I will see you around since you see I'm the dog lady," they both let out soft laughs then Joe felt a big force push him towards Demi. He looked down and saw Winston, who was now wrapping his leash around their ankles. They both laughed then looked at each other as they both leant in. Meeting halfway, their lips barely touched had already created a fire within them that had not been there. A flame that was gone from Joe, from Demi, from both. A connect Joe had not had. All because of a dog that followed him. He gained not only "mans best friend" but his own two children, Bella and Winston, and a woman who ignited the flame. He was once again in contact with the world and not taking the pain just one day at a time. But taking the joys of life one day at a time.
