Some 50,000 engineering jobs are up for grabs, but only 40,000 engineering graduates are looking for work. According to the Association of German Engineeers, the situation is set to get even worse: the demand for skilled workers is growing, while the number of engineering students is declining.

High-tech companies are particularly hard-hit by the shortfall such as Wittenstein in Igersheim. The company, which produces standard motors and gearheads for applications in industrial, aerospace, simulation and medical markets, is desperately seeking 25 engineers and technicians and it knows it has to make potential employees offers they cannot refuse if it wants to avoid remaining understaffed. Wittenstein is now cooperating with a technical college in Bad Mergesheim, offering 15 students a traineeship for three years, with a promise of emplyoment once they finish. The company is also holding on to senior members of staff as long as possible.

  • @PSNMarksmanSniper yes I am sure the german girls are waiting for you...

  • This is an ingenious idea. I would love to be able to attend something like this in America but greedy companies here are outsourcing jobs like crazy.

  • i wish if the U.S. was much like that, i believe if U.S. companies were more hand on instead of outsourcing and bring in more foreign engineers and spending billions in lobby power. it would take out more people out of the welfare programs to be more productive to the society. technical experience is more important than a degree and even Phd in many cases that i have gone through. Germans pay much more in taxes, yet they manage to keep a healthy manufacturing base than the U.S.. and it suks

  • wow german women are soooo beautiful, i'm asian and i feel very dirty minded right now

  • the studentin is real cute !!!!

  • I agree. I'd sign up for this.

  • well then they should hire more apprentices in the first instance rather than expecting the world to rack up huge education expenses by attending a university for a piece of paper and little hands on.

    companies should train employees themselves

  • You didn't study engineering for that reason? I find that kind of silly. Engineering isn't restricted to Australia.

"in Aus it helps lots 2b white"....Just like in Arab countries, it would help to be Arab or when in Asian countries it helps to be Asian. Hey, if that's the way it is, that's the way it is. If I go to some African country looking for a job and get rejected because I think it's to do with me not being African, then hell it won't feel good but it's understandable.

  • wonder how desperate they r for engineers now with the huge economic downturn?

  • just because half of *students* r non-whites doesn't help non-white to get jobs in any way. i wanted 2 study engineer but i didn't PRIMARILY for fact that in Aus it helps lots 2b white.
