A brief demonstration of how I probe.
1. Drop an 8au or 16au probe at the estimated target location, with a filter setup for that ship type (marauders in this case)
2. Scan and see if there is anything in range
3. Adjust the range of the probe down, scan again to make sure the target is within range
4. Drop probes that have 2x the range of the 'center' probe and set them in a triangle formation around the 'center' probe on a flat plane
5. Probe to get the single-dot results
6. Move the 'center' probe onto one of these dots, disabling all the other probes - run a scan at the dot's location
7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 until a fairly high strength is attained using the 'center' probe or the target's distance estimation is within a reasonable limit
8. Continue narrowing down the results until a warpable signature is obtained
In case of a high sensor strength target ship
9. Set up a little pyramid of 0.5au range probes, with the target dot located in their center
10. Adjust their distance from the target (closing in on it) until a warpable is obtained
These methods can also be used for probing out signatures, with one difference. Signatures (with exception to wormholes) are located within a 4 to 4.5au radius around planets. This makes probing for them somewhat simpler, but also harder, as their effective sensor strength is far higher than your average player ship, often requiring that you narrow all the way down to 0.25au and then STILL make a little probe-pyramid to finally get a warpable.

from what I understand CCP recently changed the way filters work, and probe results have ID tags and such now - I'm going to be replacing this video with a more specific one sometime soon
