This is the "international" extended remix with the three different choruses African, European and Caribbean Queen being sung. It differs slightly from the regular extended remix, on which the story below is based .

It seems an explanation is in order why I meddled with the pitch, before I put the track to a video and uploaded it to YouTube.
I am born in 1979, and when this song was first aired on the radio, I was 5 years old (1984). It was a pure and innocent, but also disturbing time for both me and my family. I had to spend a lot of time in the hospital, for having otitis and sinusitis all of the time.
In 1985 my dear father brought home from his work a - probably illegally copied - cassette of the album Suddenly. I loved that tape so dearly I played it over and over again. It comforted me in my hospital weeks and I felt Billy Ocean was my personal hero. On that tape, the order of songs was slightly different from the official (legal) version (I found out years later, when I bought the cd). Anyway, when I played the tape on my walkman I discovered a slightly higher pitch compared to playing it in my stereo set. Looking back I believe that's the first revelation of my absolute pitch hearing.
Later on my cassette deck went bad; it no longer played in the right pitch, but slowed down more and more, until it finally broke down.
In the early nineties, the hospital-weeks were out; they had finally led to the diagnose of autism! Finally there was an explanation for my unusual music perception.

I got myself a cd-player and immediately ran to my local store to buy a(n official) copy of the Suddenly-album. I was shocked!!! It sounded so clear, so bright, so digital, so perfectly in tune... I could no longer listen to it. My memories of this music were damaged, if not ruined.
For instance, Caribbean Queen was no longer sounding in the safe and known D sharp minor, but in it's original key of D minor. My cd-player, and probably all available regular non-karaoke ones, did not (and do not now) have a pitch control function on board, so I couldn't make the cd sound exactly as I remembered.
I decided not to play the album anymore. The cassette that had been a part of my dearest memories, was first used for hasty recordings of moderate pop songs I thought where good at the time, and later the tape was demolished by my totally worn down second cassette player.

It took me to the year 2007, when my musical taste was already completely overtaken by and altered to genres as symphonic rock, singer-songwriter, synthesizer and classical music, and bands, artists and composers like Genesis, Yes, Phil Collins, Howard Jones, Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Mike Oldfield and Gustav Mahler (1860-1911).
I had discovered a possibility to transfer cd's and cassettes to my computer and thus, throwing in a wave-editor (!!) changing the pitches of my most dearest songs, to the ones I remembered from the past.

And here we stand, listening to a memory from my youth, in the form of this classic Billy Ocean track, with personally altered pitch.

Thanks for being a part of that, by listening to it. You should probably best ignore the text in the video, because it's accidentally written with mostly white letters on a white background and therefore unreadable. If it helps, the explanation you are reading, says pretty much all (if not even more) there was written in the video itself.

With kind regards, Job Vink.

  • I LOVE this version...so hard to find, and it's NEVER played on the radio. Thanks for posting this!!!

  • @mendi256 Yes indeed, they never played it on the radio. Untill few years ago I didn't even know it existed. I do not know if it is an official remix, done by Nigel Green or so, or if it is one, made by a devoted amateur.

  • Funny thing is, this is the speed I remember hearing the original song at as well.

  • @eye4feet Cool man!!

  • You guys, thanks for all your kind words on my video and it's story. It's a very remarkable thing that of all my videos this is the number one popular one with 130,000+ views! I hope you all will keep coming back to view it; it was a pleasure to share it with you, 'cause for me it is very important to contribute to explaining and exploring the many different sides of autism, and allthough I admit there are a few who come close, the true Rain Man-like autist does not exist in the real world.

  • Thanks y'all for keeping to come back and view my video. It was a pleasure to share it with you.
