stickitupupipe:(what a name) He tries to hard to get the Gilels touch? He is Gilels, it comes naturally to him. If this does not do it for you then you do not know about music... You must be young so you will have time to grow, and if at this age you listen to this music then good.

To all the Sherlocks who noticed the mistakes - I had the very good fortune to see Gilels several times between 1978 and 81, and the mistakes almost characterised his performances! But the musicality was such that the mistakes simply didn't matter. And to anyone who suggests he was anything other than utterly modest in his interpretation, he was famous for being one of the most self effacing ever. To quote the Penguin Guide "Gilels offers playing of an order of artistry that silences criticism".

He had daughter who can play piano well too.

Anyone else notice the striking similarity of the motives in this movement to Beethoven's Symphony no.4, 2nd movement?

The orchestra is great!

Nah, he tries too hard to add the "Gililes" touch to his playing, instead of just playing it the way it was intended. It´s egotistically played. Technically he´s obviously good , but ......sorry .........he doesn´t do it for me.

Beethoven briefly visited heaven in his life time, and during this brief period of time he composed his piano concerto number 3....................

I almost feel that I'm inside a painting by Hyronimous Bosch when I'm listening to this music

@SugarTomAppleRoger I didn't like Richter's to be honest. Too much style, force, for me. Gilels one has passion and colourful nostalgia.

@bernie10025 I love his Brahms 2nd concerto. Shame it's not up on youtube. He's my favourite pianist as well.
It's horrible that Gilels died soon after this because of a doctor error. He's my favorite pianist for Beethoven, and he OWNS Brahms, especially the 2nd piano concerto.

Gilels is excellent- his sound is delicate and immense in the same time and his style is so strict and strong and convincing! Not a one false note (in respect of style)!
This is real Beethoven!
Yet a musician his size deserves a much better orchestra!
