You've probably heard me tell you that high blood pressure can lead to an increased risk for strokes and heart attacks. But besides medications what can you do to lower your blood pressure. Many people who come to see me do not want to start blood pressure medications for fear that they'll be taking them the rest of their lives. I don't like to just put people on medications if I think that some lifestyle changes could make a difference for them. Here are 6 things you can do to try to lower your blood pressure. 1. Start exercising. 30 min of some form of aerobic exercise daily has been shown to lower blood pressure. 2. Improve your diet. That means lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and overall, smaller portions. 3. Watch your minerals. Limit your sodium intake to less than 2000mg a day and increase your potassium and magnesium intake. These are found in fresh fruits and vegetables. 4. Eat your chocolate. Yes, really, but only 1.5 oz of dark chocolate a day. That would be a small square. 5. Catch up on your Mozart. Research has shown that listening to 30min a day of classical music with deep, abdominal breathing can lower your blood pressure. And 6. Drink a glass of red one. But only one. Studies show that a woman's blood pressure can be reduced with a glass of red wine a day but any more leads to higher blood pressure.
