Painter George Shaw is one of the nominees for the Turner Prize 2011.
For almost two decades his subject matter has been the place in which he grew up, a housing estate in Coventry and the surrounding streets. Every detail is scrupulously captured in Humbrol enamel paint, the kind of paint used by children on Airfix model kits.

Shaw's paintings are full of nostalgia for a lost childhood and exude a sense of time passing. More recently he has focused on the grim urban decay that is slowly infecting the local area.

The Turner Prize is a contemporary art award that was set up in 1984 to celebrate new developments in contemporary art. The prize is awarded each year to 'a British artist under fifty for an outstanding exhibition
or other presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding'.

  • This is real art stripped back to its roots. This man has managed to create work that is as contemporary as any other using a traditional medium, his work reminds me of damien hirsts "physical impossibility of death in the mind of something living" in the way it highlights our mortality and our ever changing and in some cases 'bleak' lives.

  • Loved this video about what goes behind this mans paintings. Feel like I'm sort of on the same wavelength here.

  • GEORGE GETS MY VOTE....

  • Anagram: 'rough prizer gent was ere' becomes #turnerprize George Shaw (see pic)

  • @2mabell Sure he can paint. I like his work but imagine how banal art would be if it was limited to paint of canvas.

I like to see a bit more creativity and originality in art, rather than just a painted image.

  • Are there any other nominees that you have interviewed? I love watching these bacause the artist has a chance to explain their work at a personal level

  • Thank god, a real artist finally has got some recognition in this country. No need for the bullshit and hype here. Just a two-D images that are not process driven that have the power to transcend their own reality.

  • LOVE IT

  • I like Time Machine very much.
