The British Library has digitised over a quarter of its Greek manuscripts (284 volumes) for the first time and made them freely available online at www.bl.uk/manuscripts thanks to a generous grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

  • Yes we do. This comes up a lot. We have found that clean hands without gloves cause less damage.

  • This is fabulous! I'm so, so happy you've been doing this. For centuries the only way to inspect a manuscript was by traveling to London, Paris, Berlin, Meteora, Athos, &c. More recently, microfilms. But now anyone who studies Greek and learns some palaeography (which there are also much more online resources for now) can have access. Similar projects at Oxford, Florence, the Vatican &c.

A real democratization of scholarship! So thank you so very much!

  • Fascinating stuff. Can the works be freely used and copied?

  • Do you handle old manuscripts without gloves?
