Although an authentic South East Asian Rendang is quite a dry meaty dish, we've switched our Rendang up a little by using the same flavours but with monkfish and keeping the sauce super creamy. Enjoy :)

    Hi, guys, a Malaysian fan of yours weighing in here.

    Rendang is usually reserved for poultry or meat. This is because Rendang requires the caramelisation of the coconut milk (not brown sugar) and needs to be cooked down to a rather dry consistency. That process would ruin and overcook any fish/shellfish. What you've made looks closer to a "Masak Lemak", which loosely translates to "cooked in coconut milk". It matches the consistency of a Thai curry, not a Rendang.

    In reference to Johanan Sen's comment, more accurately Masak Lemak translates to "cooked in fat", and the fat refers to the coconut milk. Masak lemak dishes are usually creamy and spicy (as are almost all South East Asian food), and are often in shades of yellow. So yes, this dish would more accurately represent masak lemak dishes rather than rendang.

    That being said, you guys should come down to Malaysia and try out all the food here. We aren't a food haven for nothing :)

    there're various types of rendang in indonesia though :) you still can find this type of rendang in indonesia, so this version can be considered as rendang too :)
