In 2010, DP&L completed construction of a 1.1 Megawatt solar array near our Yankee St. substation in Washington Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. It covers seven acres and will annually generate the equivalent to what is needed to power 150 homes in a year.

Largest Solar Facility in Southwestern Ohio
The facility has over 9,100 solar panels that are made of amorphous silicon and are 125 watts each. The array cost $5 million to build. State energy legislation calls for 25% of all energy consumed by Ohioans to be from alternative energy by 2025. Of that, .5% must be solar energy.

Visit the Facility
The solar facility is open to the public for self-guided visits Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. An educational kiosk on site includes a video that explains solar power as well as a display that shows you how much electricity is being generated.

The facility is across from the Yankee Trace Golf Course at 9975 Yankee St.. Get directions to the facility here - http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&gl=us&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&ms....

See the array's 3 months of construction in 2 minutes.

  • @mediamaker2000 We don't allow access during construction for safety reasons - since it is an active construction site. We're happy we can share some of the excitement through these videos, though.

  • Are there plans for another array anywhere? I'd love to come and see it while it's being built!

  • @mediamaker2000 Thanks for your interest!

No need for an appointment. There is a small, entertainment kiosk which has a video explaining solar (also available in our YouTube feed) and a display that shows you how much power is being generated. And you can see the field behind a security fence. We do not give tours.

It is fairly tucked back off the road. Just keep following the DP&L signs, and you should arrive at a gate. There is a sign posted with a password, which works 8-5/M-F.

  • That's great, not far from where I go al the time. Do you have to make an appointment for a tour or just go on in?

    Thanks for the reply!

  • @mediamaker2000 The facility is across from the Yankee Trace Golf Course at 9975 Yankee St.. I posted more details and a link to directions in the description above, because you can't post links in comments.

    It's open for self-guided tours Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

  • Awesome! What road is that on?
