Piney Brown was born in Birmingham, AL. in 1922. As a teenager he performed with his sisters singing gospel as "The Blue Jay Singers". He made his debut recording for the Miracle label in 1947 backed by Eddie Chamblee on sax and Sonny Thompson on piano. The 1950's found him waxing sides for Apollo, Jubilee, Parrot, Sittin' In With, King & Atlas. In the 1960's he recorded for Mad in Chicago, and for Cimarron and Sound Stage 7 in Nashville. Brown did keep his club career up, performing on stage with the likes of Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry. He also wrote songs for Little Milton & Roscoe Gordon and co-composed "The Popcorn" with James Brown. Brown had a long hiatus from recording after 1969, but was brought back in the studio in 2002. His last CD "One Of These Days" was released in 2006, a hybrid of blues, soul & funk. A resident of Dayton, OH. since 1963, he passed away there on February 5, 2009 after a lengthy illness.
