Five years ago, Martin Garcia, recently arrived from his native Mexico, was working in a deli in Northern California near Pleasanton racetrack when a patron walked in and asked him, based on his size, if he had ever thought of being a jockey.

Thus began the most unlikely of ascensions. Like a budding actor discovered by an agent while sitting at a bus stop, Garcia, 25, has become a riding star. His profile has risen under the direction of trainer Bob Baffert, who in recent months has entrusted him with his best mounts. On Saturday, that partnership scored its biggest victory yet, when Lookin At Lucky, the beaten favorite two weeks earlier in the Kentucky Derby, captured the 135th running of the Preakness Stakes on a gorgeous, spring day at Pimlico Race Course.

For Baffert, it was his fifth victory in the Preakness. For Garcia, who only rode in his first Triple Crown race two weeks ago aboard Conveyance in the Derby, it was his first Triple Crown race win.

  • I don't care if you've followed racing since you were 5. Every year an idiot says "worst crop of etc" So annoying and old.

  • Who hyped Super Saver? As far as I know Calvin did saying they would win the TC. Hyped is a childish word anyway.

  • First Dude's my favorite.

  • @Kellie3315 yea they, (the factor and martin) just had an amazing wire to wire performance in the Rebel.

  • First dude had a hard time with the turns at this track. Ramon had to pull him toward the rail quite a bit, but he loved the track, and when he straightened into the stretch he seemed to come back a little more. I don't think he's a big fan of turns period though. He always seems to come back when they straighten away.

  • @kivah10 He had to go back to Mexico for several weeks while getting his work visa extended, but he's back now. Look for him to be riding The Factor for Baffert, possibly this weekend in the San Vicente.

  • @CrispinFlora hey,by any chance,do you know what happened to Martin Garcia? why he is not ridding any more?

  • And here's first DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD....

  • does anyone know what happened to martin garcia? why he is not ridding anymore?

  • I think caracortado would have run a lot better if he hadn't been rushed to the lead at the three eights pole, I think he looked good until that last sixteenth, he started to tire. I think he's got a nice future.

  • @roseonramble, I think you're absolutely correct with that comment. Every year someone says "worse crop they can remember," LOL, and every year, basically the same thing happens in 3yr.old crops. Eventually, as the year progresses, there's always 2 or 3 horses that go on and distinguish themselves from the rest of the 3yr.old field. In 2010, it's been Lookin At Lucky and Paddy O' Prado. No different than any other year. Just like in 78', it was Affirmed and Allydar.

  • Lucky fired a bullet work at Hollywood Park on October 25th in preparation for this year's Breeders Cup Classic. The official clocker caught Lucky at 1:10:80 for seven furlongs on Hollywood Park's cushion track. The fastest of 11 timed works. He then galloped out seven furlongs at the end of the work in 1:24:80. Baffert, understandably, was very pleased with the work. I think Lucky's the one. If Zenyatta is gonna repeat as B.C. Classic champ? Lucky's the one she'll have to beat to do it. IMO.
