I was curious about the cannibalism part and I actually found a copy of the real story here:

The story is pretty accurate except in what I suspect to be the real version the old couple had befriended the rabitt first (who they treated like their own child) and the racoon was captured because he had been tearing up the farmers field. The Racoon did kill the old woman but did not make her into soup but the rest of the story is basically the same.

wow nice fairy tale for kids- the meat in the soup that the racoon made for grandpa Ataru, it was grandma Lum! Cannibalism ftw :(
