On a beautiful day (June 11, 2007), art was enjoyed by more than three hundred people from different origins, cultures and faiths. All sat side by side, and face to face, painting a 25 metre canvas in Estrop Park, Basingstoke. Forks, knives and spoons were used as tools to draw images with paint that filled small plates.
People were asked to draw their connections to the others around them. The colourful shapes, marks and words were a language of communication celebrating diversity. Equality, simplicity and peacefulness were other concepts enhanced by the work. The event was attended by the Mayor of Basingstoke, who took part in the painting.
The painted canvas might have been the longest painting in UK at the time.
The Art In The Park project was sponsored by the BDF (Basingstoke Diversity Forum, UK), instigated and coordinated by artist Ayat Alhaji with the cooperation of artists Kathy Oldridge and Hazel Boundy. Members from the BDF and the Basingstoke Council helped through the event.
Film and photos were captured by various people including participants.
