Joan Cabanilles 1644-1712 passed virtually his entire career in Valencia. The Pasacalles ('pass through the streets') is still played by wind bands, especially during the annual festival of Falles, when huge effigies constructed during the winter are burnt to celebrate the return of daylight. To me this great keyboard piece, like many Baroque chaconnes, makes similar journey, from grief and stabbing pain, to ebullience and triumph. TR Flemish-style harpsichord by Fergus Hoey, Oxford 1983.
