Mount Mercy University Poverty Simulation

What's it like to be a single parent, trying to support your kids? How do you pay the bills if you don't have transportation to get to work? Mount Mercy University students had the opportunity to learn first-hand the answers to these questions as they participate in a Poverty Simulation - role-playing a variety of characters and situations. The students had to navigate their way through community services and resources in order to keep their jobs, pay their bills, and look after their families. The simulation enabled students to gain a deeper understanding of what it's like for people living in poverty situations, and an awareness of just how difficult it can be to thrive on limited resources.
