na dude - the teacher is a visiting sensei from Japan - he's clearly frustrated wth the level of technique in the club's 'blackbelts' thats why he drills the crap out of them with basics

1st of all, It's silly to compare one thing with another. Traditional karate has a vary different purposes respect MMA. You study it for defence against untrained attackers in a civilian environment. You DO NOT study it to fight against a MMA professional fighter.

2nd. You shouldn't judge a sensei and a method from a 8 minutes video. Karate is not only kihon. It's kihon + kata + bunkai + kumite (all forms of kumite) and I really don't think that this sensei just teach kihon.

re: some of the negative comments:

To be fair to the participants, it may very well be that before they started doing kihon the students were tortured with some hard-core callisthenics. (If I'd led the warm up, they'd be wishing they were somewhere else, and I've mellowed out.)

Yano-sensei is the real deal, though. How fortunate for them to learn from someone of this calibre.

I'm not yet experineced karate or any other martial art, hopefully I'll attend to one in the near future. I see a great sensei but the class is lacking even though they're blackbelt. I think most of these people are middle-aged, 30-45 at most. So, cut some slack on them. But than again, karate is about discipline. Good exercise though.

How are these guys black belts n they dont even know the proper basics? Ive heard of Karate instructors giving belts too early, but this is ridiculous. In Ju Jitsu you cant even think about getting past white belt and going on to blue unless you know the basics by heart.

Wow these are black belts?? How do you become a black belt and have such poor basic technique? Some of these people look like they truly can not be bothered about what they are doing and would rather be some where else like in front of the TV. The question is who graded these people and giving them there black belts, if this is the quality of black belts they produce they are obviously more interested in the cash that there students are paying them than teaching the ART as it should be taught!!
