Dubček's mistake (or a deliberate omission) was to go too far and too fast, thus making the hard-liners panic and giving the USSR a cause to intervene. His carelessness and reluctance to test the waters before starting any reforms was the main reason of what happened in 1968. The world was on the brink of the Third World War and the ČSSR was in the middle of the defensive line of the Warsaw Pact; under these circumstances it was at least unwise to play on the nerves of the Soviet leadership.

I'm Russian and I feel bad for all bad things that came with our communism. Yet, I want to say that Many Russians that knew the truth were shot, many went to GULAG's -millions. We suffered too. Communism, like Nazism has no nation...
