So many do not understand what musical theater was like back then. the competition was cutthroat, because there were potential hits written the best writers Broadway ever saw for countless theaters. Sweet voices, operatic voices, and great actors were a dime a dozen in New York Channing, Holiday, Martin, and especially Merman commanded a stage with a unique presence, far more rare than any specific set of skills like dancing, acting or singing.

How true! Overall, Ethel was the greatest musical comedy star Broadway has ever seen. More long running hit shows than any other veteran performer.
