In July 1990, the renowned cellist Paul Tortelier played the complete Bach Suites for the 40th anniversary of the first Festival Pablo Casals of Prades, in the beautiful Abbey of Saint-Michel de Cuba. Though in ailing health (he died later that same year), Tortelier undertook the performances as an homage to his mentor, Casals. Filmed by Peter Ammann, this document is, in the words of the cellists son, Yan Pascal Tortelier, unique in that it sums up my fathers whole life on the cello. This is Tortelier last stand. The performance might be full of errors, but the deepness and "humanity" in it is unmatchable.
