  • A #1 hit for the late Johnny Horton on the Country & Western charts. It was the 32nd #1 C&W song in the Rock Era. Johnny and my father were the same age and both died at a young age. Plane crash for Johnny and a massive heart attack for my father, who was only 49. I was only 12.

  • @mkl62 <<< THANKS for the comment !!

  • @mkl62 Car wreck, actually. He was hit by a drunk driver.

  • @alamanderflash <<< NO ACTUALLY IT WASSSS a plane crash !!!!!

  • @Midnightryder3 Funny, his record label says it was a car wreck. The story was related in the booklet included with "The Essential Johnny Horton 1956-1960: Honky Tonk Man" 2-cd set. In fact, you're the only one I've ever heard say different.

  • @alamanderflash <<<< WHOOPEEEEEE

  • I love the banjo in this song!

  • yeah i believe he died on my birthday actually

  • @Midnightryder3 A drunk driver killed him, in a car wreck.

  • Nope it was a drunk driving a truck across a bridge hit head on mid bridge. Johnny's brother was driving and his manager was in the the car with them. Johnny was the only one who died and had a premonition that some day he would be killed in a head on collision. What a great singer leaving us the gift of his song's for all the years.

  • @mkl62 Sry to hear mate

  • my dad used to sing this song to me. dad died in 1966.

  • wrong it was car crash

  • lovely part of America, never been there? then go and see for yourself.

  • actually i believe that johnny horton was killed in a car crash

  • Johnny Horton who was a very well known American country music expired on 5th November 1960. He is interred in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Haughton east of Bossier City. He died in a car accident. And the most surprising part to the entire incident is the just few months before his death he experienced premonitions about the likelihood of becoming extinct in a car bump into, which could possibly be by a drunk driver
