In 1998 a video game based on Babylon 5, named Into the Fire, was being developed by Sierra, the publishers of Homeworld. This game was to have cast the player as the pilot of a Starfury fighter craft through many missions of a dynamic storyline, while also giving the player an opportunity to "move up through the ranks" and eventually take command of capital ships and even fleets. It was to feature large battles and realistic Newtonian physics. Multiplayer competitive and cooperative modes would have allowed players to pilot ships of alien races. Christopher Franke composed and recorded new music for the game, and live action footage was filmed with the primary actors from the series.
The game was being built on the UNREAL engine at the time when Unreal and Quake 2 were State of the Art.

Work on this game ended on September 21, 1999, when, as part of a corporate reorganization, Sierra cancelled it and laid off its development staff.

Meanwhile, lackluster Star Wars and Star Trek games continue to be funded and developed so parents who were sci-fi nuts can live vicariously through their children.

The web site FirstOnes.com followed the game's development and demise, and continues to track Babylon 5 mods for other games. FirstOnes.com also hosts the site of the Space Dream Factory, an independent project to develop several standalone games. The first of these, titled "Babylon 5: I've Found Her", is set five years before the series, and can be downloaded free of charge at the project's website.

From what I remember during the game's development the system requirements to play the game were fairly low. I actually bought my first PC in anticipation of this game's release so I'd be ready to play it without upgrading.

The system requirements were:
Pentium 2 233MHz or better
(Pentium 3 recommended)
(Video Card recommended)
96 MB Ram
4X Cd Rom

THIS VIDEO CLIP IS ALL THAT REMAINS OF WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A FANTASTIC VIDEO GAME.

GODDAMN YOU SIERRA. GODDAMN YOU !

I think a Space: Above & Beyond game might kick ass too.

  • Sierra should be dismantled and each member thrown to the four corners of the universe for dumping this game.

I was sad when I heard they dumped it and I still am years later. I hate Sierra.

  • Fkn Travesty, Someone at sierra should have been shot for this...

  • Why is always the good sci-fi games that get cancelled!? First I hear Star Wars: Battlefront 3 got cancelled and now this.

  • If you want to fight in the B5 universe, download The Babylon Project.

  • @Ricardo5801 Contact Cryptic studios. They might like this idea. (I mean they found time for B5's equal, Star Trek, why not?)

And for the record, I have no link with Cryptic, I just play STO, one of their games.

  • I was really looking forward to this also. Realistic Newtonian physics are lacking in games. This time period was the beginning of the end for Sierra. Shortly after, Vivendi happened and things went to hell very fast. They don't exist anymore, really (activision owns their stuff).

  • WHERE THE HECK CAN I GET THIS GAME!?!?!?!?!?!?!....and why is the starfury shooting at narn and earth alliance ships...?

  • b5.hc-gamer.de if you search an b5 game

  • FUCK YOU SIERRA!

  • @dslcobra I got the game too. U can play it with a normal Joystick (if u r a good pilot^^). If you want to play the "finished" version download the update for the game from the creaters website! There r some mission addons, too. The game is freaking awesome!

  • "Meanwhile, lackluster Star Wars and Star Trek games continue to be funded and developed so parents who were sci-fi nuts can live vicariously through their children." - - I love that line!!! hahaha....

  • Well, guess the best fan game for B5 is "The Babylon Project", running the Freespace 2 SCP :D
