I too served in the ACC and was posted to Shrewsbury in the 80s when they had sounded the death knell for Sir John Moore barracks. The events that were staged to mark this sad occasion were brilliant but the high light for me was the band playing this on the old square at sunset. No one can do these sorts of occasions better than us Brits. They also had this on the juke box in The White Hart [sadly long gone]
