If you talk to any of our users, the first thing theyll tell you is, Im never going back to paper.
It came to be a no-brainer. There were no reasons not to go ahead and to try it.
Well, HealthWyse is in the business of providing information services to mobile home care, hospice and private duty nurses.
We have a set of applications that run on PDAs, laptops, work tablets and allows the clinician to go into a patients home and record all of the clinical documentation that they need to record.
When we were paper-based, we actually weighed the paper. We actually had scales and we had our standards that said, you know, we would keep it below 40 pounds a day that we have to file.
We use the Sybase iAnywhere database on each of the mobile devices that we use so that those clinicians that are using those devices in the patients home are actually operating off of a Sybase database.
Weve actually saved costs.
Its made my job easier. The less time you have to spend documenting, the more time you have with the patient. And, thats what its all about.
One of our customers was affected by a flood in which they could not get access to their building.
We had to shut off the power. So, we were told, we have about, oh, about an hours notice, that we had to evacuate.
Now this is a headquarters where, normally, you would have all this paper records. The agency in that model would have had access to nothing and patients could have been in trouble.
And, we had to figure out, what were we going to do? Where were we going to go?
Because we have multiple replicas of the data, we were able to set them up in an alternate site and allow them to access 100% of the data that they had, even though there was no access to anything at the main site.
When I look back at the whole situation, the thing thats most amazing to me, is that, to the field staff, it was almost invisible, and they had all the information they needed, right there, on their palms. And, so, they continued on with work.
What SQL iAnywhere provided for us was a platform that could work, not only in a mobile environment, but also be able to support a very, very large database.
Were able to use the SQL iAnywhere product all the way from a database on the handheld that is 50 to 100 megabytes in size, all the way up to 3 gigabyte databases for individual agencies. The total number of databases were running in data centers is about a terabyte in size.
Sybase provides a set of services that we require in a 24 by 7 operation.
When we looked at Sybase, their products on the handheld were not sub-sets of their products that went on the desktop. They were the exact same product with a full functionality.
We can actually provide this state-of-the-art technology, not only to the large agencies that have IT staff, but also to the small agencies that, maybe, have no IT staff.
Theres only one product out there today that can do all of this and thats the Sybase SQL iAnywhere product.
It is not only the support that we, in a partnership that we have obtained with Sybase now, but its also whats coming in the future.
We care about patient care. Were on the cutting edge as far as technology. We understand that nurses and professionals need good tools to deliver good care and that we had invested in that.
