I was at that game. Purdue's receivers had been dropping passes all night and I was terrified that the receiver would drop that perfect final pass as well. But it all ended well.

Actually, there still isn't a "rule" to have a Top 10 team in the BCS, it's just that back then, K-State was still barely becoming a national power, and then (and still now) their fanbase is definitely NOT known for traveling well, and the "reasoning" for not inviting them to the big money games is that they wouldn't sell tickets.
