@maofas Also, high school physics like Newton's 3rd law are insufficient for explaining the complex dynamics of something like a punch. Until someone with a master's in physics wants to chime in, it's best to leave it to things that can be plainly observed to be true (i.e. I don't fall back from my force being reflected back when punching unless my heel is flat, that's ridiculous).
-
@ZYTfriend Nope, the truth is it's done mostly for aesthetic reasons and people retroactively make up technical reasons (which wind up being not questioned and passed on) to justify it. I practiced rear foot flat on impact my first 15 years of karate before changing my practice to allow my heel to lift off the floor. You will not fall backwards if you allow your heel to lift up, that's ridiculous. Boxers do it this way and their right straight is the same punch as gyaku tsuki.

@SilentXNightify To make the punch fast and strong, god hip movement is necessary. You start with the knee bent = open hip and then move hip forward = closed hip and that can be acheived without lifting the heel. If you actually hit something hard and your heel is up in the air the resulting force will go backwards and then you need a firm footstand (8 point grip of the floor).
-
@ZYTfriend Its not about the foot being lifted up, but the hips of the attacker turning that causes the foot to lift. This is where force comes from. The reason they do this is because it shifts the weight to your punch with the help of hip rotation which gives out explosiveness when released. Force=Mass X Acceleration
-
the attacker is shifting his weight, that is why you see his foot go up. that makes his punch stronger, faster and longer reach.
-
Lifting your foot does not make your punch stronger, Newton learned us why. Greater reach maybe.. Kihon and kumite is two different things I know that.
-
@ZYTfriend Traditional Shotokan is foot/heel flat on the foot. Heel up is actually better though. It makes for a more powerful punch with greater reach.
Kihon is just an exercise, you aren't meant to actually fight using kihon-form.

a bit after 2:20 ... damn he's fast =D

Yes, the right foot should be in full contact with the floor
2:33 My favorite part of the video !!!
