The rifling on shotgun slugs is pure marketing. They are stabilize by being front heavy. A rifled bore is required to get spin.

the reason "rifled" slugs don't spin is simple. While they do have those angular vanes on the side of them, these are so (as crudestkill put it) "the bullet can swag down through smaller chokes" this is correct. Normally, the air hitting these vanes would exert sufficient forces to spin the slug, but since it is traveling at supersonic speeds, there is a low pressure (less air) area behind the shock wave, which forms at the tip of the slug, less air = less force, not enough force to spin it..
