VAI observes the centenary of Nathan Milstein with a release from our celebrated Chicago Symphony Orchestra series. Milstein performs the Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky concerti with conductor Walter Hendl. He also plays the Prelude from Bachs Violin Sonata in E for Solo Violin. These live performances (1962-63) display the violinist at his patrician best.

  • that's because nathan milstein never played a piece the same way for each performance... He was a genius that always experimented and was never boring

  • There are only men in the orchestra. Chicago Symphony in the 1960s.

  • @symfotroll you need to have a very good technique to play well the 2 mvt and those are sometimes the most difficult to play.

  • Wow, love love love his playing at 1:13-1:37. So many violinists take this passage way too fast and it loses the otherworldly beauty Tchaikovsky intended.

  • well put. heifetz makes this sound so cold. but in a way, i think it's amazing what he did with the 2nd mvmt. i've never heard anything like it. the same goes with this
