Yaakov David Homnick performs "Pischu Li/Odecha" in Miami, Florida. He is accompanied on vocals and guitar by his recording partner, Aaron Margolis. The occasion was Aaron's engagement to the future Mrs. Chana Margolis, seated here at his side.
This track will be featured on their forthcoming album. (Working title: "Tov Lev Mishteh Tamid.") Hailed by some critics as a natural heir to the musical legacy of Shlomo Carlebach, Homnick has been reticent in the past about performing his compositions. His only recorded song has been "Nerannena" on the 1997 album, Kivisi, by Ben Zion Weiss. He was content to allow his first cousin, Akiva Chaim Homnick of Jerusalem, to be the famous composer of the family while he wrote his books and articles. Teaming up with Margolis, an accomplished vocalist (half his age) who performs widely in a range of genres from pop through operatic and cantorial, Homnick has finally been emboldened to take the stage himself to participate in the delivery of his own tunes. Margolis' venturesome arrangements and the pair's frolicsome vocal improvisations make for a peppy listening experience Homnick likes to call "heavy mettle." The album promises to be a fun ride. The larger question will be if it hits the mark in inaugurating a new era of Carlebach-inspired music with a distinctive flavor and a snappy pace. Homnick had a personal relationship with Carlebach and is said to know all the recorded songs and most of the unrecorded. The music is his but the words are from Psalms or the prayer book.
