I actually think the main thing that made him come up with a song like this, was the elisha-trace-breakup thing, as he claimed. but I also think that he put some of his own experience in this song. So I think this song is both about his best friends break-up and his own with britney. I would say that I think he lies if he says he wasn't thinking about her while writing it.
