Smart Orangutan

A really smart Orangutan at the Omaha, NE Zoo. She wanted peanuts located outside of her habitat, so after trying to use a stick to get them (and failing), she grabbed a piece of ground and stretched it out and used it to drag the peanut to where she could reach. She then shelled it and gave the nut to her baby :) It was incredibly amazing to watch. Sorry for the crappy filming job!! That's why I'm a photographer and not a videographer LOL

we were there on Saturday and saw the same orangutan doing the same thing...we were really amazed too!!!! to smart to be locked in cages all day!!!!!

That's so mean, why didn't you just give it the peanut instead of filming it struggle through a cage?

its funny how we look at this and say its so smart in that its displaying some forms of higher intelligence: planning, using tools, and adaptation. whats even better is theres probably something out there looking at us humans saying the same thing. "how cute. they're so smart down there on earth with their simple technologies"

Orangutans are way smarter than any other primate. They are an awesome animal and just incredible. Too bad they are endangered to be extinct around 2023. We must cherish the moments that they are here.
