Lyrics:

Good morning Weathercock: How did you fare last night?
Did the cold wind bite you, did you face up to the fright
When the leaves spin from October
and whip around your tail?
Did you shake from the blast, did you shiver through the gale?

Give us direction; the best of goodwill ---
Put us in touch with fair winds.
Sing to us softly, hum evening's song ---
Tell us what the blacksmith has done for you.

Do you simply reflect changes in the patterns of the sky,
Or is it true to say the weather heeds the twinkle in your eye?
Do you fight the rush of winter; do you hold snowflakes at bay?
Do you lift the dawn sun from the fields and help him on his way?

Good morning Weathercock: make this day bright.
Put us in touch with your fair winds.
Sing to us softly, hum evening's song.
Point the way to better days we can share with you.

  • Ever since Living in the Past, I've admired Ian Anderson's gift of consistently creating what sounds like an authentic centuries-old, very English tradition and then apparently updating it for the modern rock era. I realise as I write that he is likely one of the most original writers of the last 40 years, if not genuinely unique.

    100% agree

  • This is one of my favorite Tull numbers! I love the classical English flavor of this song. I wish there was a video to accompany this as it would be a great one.

  • Ian Anderson is six centuries old.

  • Good god that drumbeat! :O

  • I saw Tull in Buffalo for the Aqualung tour. It was the best concert I ever saw. This band has been producing great music for 35 years and still going strong. They are unique, there will never be a band like this one. Thanks Ian you are a genius.

  • The chorus gives me the chills. I love this song...

  • I listened to JT almost 34 years ago, I thought back then it was a mind blowing rock band and my opinion hasn't changed one bit!!
