Through the shifting it's not force against force. He's cutting into the hook from the inside. Also the tan sau is a triangle. The way he holds his forearm at an angle, he's already deflecting much force from the hook. Then through body structure you can take the rest. Personally I would rather use bil sao. But this is possible.

There is a better method that reflects the physics of VT. In VT we typically don't turn and block as VT's greatness is that we continuously occupy the centerline with both hands in complete control.
Imagine turning your head and body to the right while walking forward. You have abandoned your centerline.
We needn't rely on brute force to block. Also If the roundhouse is a hair closer it would hook around the tan making the tan useless. I've attached the 1st of 2 vids that explain.

I love Tan Sau...excellent defense against a hooking haymaker punch...tan with lead hand as you Da to opp. center-line targets with your other hand...best when you do Tan & Da both at same time! Thank you for this clear explanation,Sifu.
