This is a video of a test we performed on a Zinsco Breaker. We put 60 amps on a 20 amp breaker and it failed to trip. Within 60 seconds the romex caught on fire and got to over 500 degrees. Emard's Electrical Home Technicians is performing various tests on obsolete breakers to determine how safe these residential breakers are. More test videos will be coming soon.

  • We call Zinsco's and FedPac's "Arc Welders"

It's hilarious when you hear customer say "There isnt a problem with our panel, we never trip any breakers"

  • It's worrying, as there is no sensible way to test breakers in practice. You have to trust the breaker to trip (in the same way that you don't test fuses).

That said, they must have used the wrong cable for the breaker. A 20 A breaker should have 3.5 mm2 (under US code). My calculations show that after 60 seconds, it will reach about 120 C - hot, but not ignition temperature.

Finally, at 60 A a 20A breaker is allowed 15 seconds to operate. The wire they used would have incinerated well before

  • Awesome, we had those breakers at work in an old depot in Albany

  • that was Intense.

  • Captain 150

Why are you telling everyone fpe are cool?do you sell them?they are obsolete junk the co. is done in u. s.

  • My parents have one of these fuckin breakers at their house that is hooked up to aluminum wiring. Cheap asses wont replace any of it.

  • well done , and I agree with Avatarofavatar about convince homeowners .

  • @MrSlipperypeet by the sound of it i think it was an electric fan or something similar

  • @AvatarOfAvatar No kidding! I'm an electrician myself, and it's extremely difficult to convince homeowners that they need a new panel if their Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Pushmatic panels appear to be working without any problems. They don't understand that if a problem does occur, their panel may not protect them.

  • Great video, I also call them Arc Welders !!!
