GST Steel, en Kansas City, llevaba 105 años fabricando acero cuando Romney y sus socios se apoderaron de la empresa en 1993. En cada oportunidad, hicieron las cosas a medias y le sacaron dinero a la empresa, así endeudándola. Cuando la compañía por fin se declaró en bancarrota, los trabajadores perdieron más que sus trabajos, también se les negó sus pensiones completas y su seguro médico, así que el gobierno tuvo que intervenir y ofrecer un rescate.
