Spanish Monkey Dealer - undercover footage

The USA is the largest user of laboratory primates in the world. The UK is the largest user of laboratory monkeys in the EU with primate tests up in 2005. Three countries, the UK, France and Germany are responsible for almost all of the 10,000 experiments on monkeys in the EU2.

The Spanish monkey dealer exposed by ADI is importing macaque monkeys from Mauritius. It will have an estimated capacity for 3,000 macaque -- almost half of the EU's annual macaque use (75-80% of all laboratory monkeys used in the EU are macaques .

To mark International Primate Day in 2006, ADI organised motions to be simultaneously placed before the European Parliament and the US House of Representatives were also tabled in the UK Parliament, the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly. This is believed to be the first time that a global animal protection campaign had been initiated in the US and European Parliaments on the same day, and signaled the start to an international drive to end non-human primate experiments. calling for an end to experiments on non-human primates. I mean, this is bad but I don't really see how these conditions are worse than some of the zoos I've seen. The cages seem medium size, they have room to run around and swing on things and they seem clean. I didn't see any stereotypic behavior. As far as I could tell from this blurry video they seemed healthy.

If you want to pick an animal that needs some help what about horses, stabled in boxes all day in what is proportionally a much smaller area?

Why would you need to shoot, "undercover," video at a 100% legal primate breeding center? It seems you are searching for something that isn't there.

Well, whats the issue? All I saw were groups of monkeys hangin out togather. The cages and facilities all looked well kept and no signs of physical abuse. You people are trying to make money by depicting harm or mistreatment so folks will donate to help YOUR cause. I think it's all a scam, NO amount of money will stop this. DO NOT DONATE MONEY TO THESE SCAMS !!!

If anyone is interested in how much UK charities make each year AND how much is spent on the aims of the group and how much goes out in to the Director's pockets, have a look at the UK Charity Commission site and do a search. If they are UK registered you can see their accounts. Businesses register as a charity here to avoid tax.

I was amazed at how many use old library footage from the late 80's/early 90's for emotional blackmail. NONE will SHOW NEW PROOF any of this goes on today-why is that!

Well said, they do seem OK. Far better than when they are stuck in a small cage in a house and used as a toy before being butchered by pet owners. They pull the monkeys teeth out, remove it's finger & toe nails, testicles, penis and in extreme cases, vocal cords. They even have ligaments cut so they can't jump. Then it has a wire collar and chain fitted. The problem with all these clips is that they are old and from a central library. Charities avoiding tax make a great living through this!

People would say that this sort of captivity and treatment is no different to how pet owners treat their monkeys. Without meaning to be, pet owners are cruel - they isolate monkeys and keep them in a cage, deprived of monkey company and grooming...deprived of a natural habitat and the monkeys will be castrated, have all of their teeth pulled out, nails pulled out, dressed in nappies and human clothes and generally abused as a toy, even washed in soap. The monkey goes insane and self harms.

In the U.S.A they have been drug testing on HUMAN BEINGS - foster kids, disabled patients, poor... They are SELECTIVE who they do it to, and when they do - it is against the patients will. One hospital that does this is JACOBI MEDICAL CENTER; they also have been sued for MALPRACTICE and Consumer Reports say they are the WORST HOSPITAL IN THE COUNTRY. Happens to people, not just animals in the U.S.A.

No animals should be put in a cage, not a bird, not a monkey, not a lion...NONE. How would you like to be put behind bars? It is cruel and unusual punishment. Animals like people were meant to be FREE - not bound; in isolation or captive. I hate zoo's - show your kid a picture of an animal, in a book - not behind a cage. Or go to Africa and see them wild.

The UK Government should STOP research subsidies to universities and drug companies that import and/or buy monkeys to torture. All the research has been done, I don't think they can find anything new to do to the poor monkey. If companies stopped conning the Government out of money, this trade would almost vanish. I hate people being cruel to animals. Testing on UK Prisoners would be best, they are all scum and killing them would save taxpayers a fortune. They choose to be locked up!
