The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, is a BBC television adaptation of Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy broadcast in January and February 1981 on BBC Two. The adaptation follows the original radio series in 1978 and 1980, the first novel and double LP, in 1979, and the stage shows, in 1979 and 1980, making it the fifth version of the guide.

The series stars Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, David Dixon as Ford Prefect, Mark Wing-Davey as Zaphod Beeblebrox and Sandra Dickinson as Trillian. The voice of the guide is by Peter Jones. Simon Jones, Peter Jones and Mark Wing-Davey had already provided the voices for their characters in the original radio series in 1978/80. In addition, the series features a number of notable cameo roles, including Adams himself on several occasions.

Although initially thought by BBC executives to be unfilmable, the series was successfully produced and directed by Alan J W Bell and went on to win an Royal Television Society award as Most Original Program of 1981, as well as several BAFTA awards for its graphics and editing.

  • I found this on video tape at a garage sale. The lady selling it said that it was some children's show and accepted only one dollar for it. After I paid for it, I told her how great is The HHGG.

  • Not again!

  • this was the best

  • Definitely more truthful to the book than the movie (I saw the movie, read the book, saw the movie again, and am now watching the old series). But the old series is lacking Martin Freeman and the sheer beauty of the factory floor on Magrathea. But again, the series is funnier and more truthful to the book, so both have their pros and cons.

  • thanks for sharing, im a big fan of the radio series, this is wicked, they use the same voice thats edited over people. just wicked.

  • Martin Freeman is so much better as Arthur.

  • I remember this show. I used to watch this on KTEH channel 54 Sundays at 12:30am after Red Dwarf

  • I would like to say how much this was better then the 2005 version. But really all I have is nostalgia value considering I have yet to read the books even though I have the full set (no time unfortunately) and how I was barely ten when the 2005 version came out. I've been watching this one though for most of my life and see it as much better then the 2005 movie.

  • Any Adams fans should check out my channel, Kangazang is a hilarious sci-fi comedy book influenced by the great man himself

  • buy everything on bbc website or amazon ,the film was poor and didnt stick to one book ,i know if we all come together we could make a better and more important piece of work. anyway don't panic
