Built to handle herds of livestock on their way to market, Broad Street has proved wide enough to sustain three centuries of growth. The city's Puritan founders shoved other religions to the periphery for decades, dictating who could worship on Broad Street. Yet they also were foresighted enough to anchor the town at either end with parkland. (Slideshow by Scott Lituchy)

  • I miss Newark. I've been visiting Newark via Google Earth and it has changed so much. So much new architecture! But I see the crime has not gone down much. Different buildings, same day.

  • I lived for close to forty years in down neck Newark and I felt safe and loved it. I had many friends and enjoyed life there. However, it has now become something that I do not recognize and since 2005 I have lived in Florida and althought I do miss it, no longer see it for what it was. They tore down the projects, but there is still crime and drugs abound. Last week there was a drive by shooting where an off duty police officer lost his life. It looks more like the worst part of LA now.

  • i liked this video alot aswell.... i wont ever give up on my home state of new jersey and my beloved cities of newark, orange and east orange....

  • @ivanfmg I absolutely agree 100%

  • @quetnique I agree with you...When even I'm a Floridian I'm a Latin american as well...Newark is so pretty and has -as the author of this video says- so much history to tell, we - people living in this city- have made it what it is...our fathers left us a wonderful city..It is our duty to preserve it and make it better day after day. We have to look back and see how our fathers lived and what did they do to make this city so glorious...what do you think?

  • newark did change a whole lot

  • Thank you for this video. So many people see Newark as a dirty poor place. I see it as so much more. It's my home. Although I don't live there anymore, my family still does and I visit all of the time. I am proud to call Newark Home.
