It came with XP Professional and a Windows 7 upgrade DVD? What model of a Dell was it o.O? In any case, Windows 7 requires a reformat coming from Windows XP (using the upgrade DVD) as opposed to a normal update.

The Dell was ordered from the internet and did have Win XP pro installed but the Win7 disc was also included. It was said that it would be a simple Win update. They had help with a person of high knowledge but even they gave up and Win XP even crashed?????? It's very frustrating having problems with a new laptop.

See I like how you switch from a $500 PC to $850 one, but an 18" screen IS NOT comparable to a 2560-by-1440 27" HD display. 4 GBs of RAM IS NOT 8 GBs of RAM. $500 GB HDD IS NOT a TB.

Windows 7 reached a 4% market share in less than three weeks.

gg.

But hey, at least Apple notebooks have those shiny, trendy exteriors!

Acer Aspire 8930-7665 - Core 2 Quad 2 GHz - 18.4 " - 4 GB Ram - 500 GB HDD

Starting at $850.

How much was the Mac again?

Oh yeah, I forgot, all of you are trendy college kids. Tap into those student loans.

Did I mention that this is a LAPTOP computer.

Partially because Apple doesn't sell budget computers. I don't consider Apple's Mac Mini, which costs $600 and still lacks a monitor/keyboard/mouse, a budget computer. Sending a technician to your house on the next business day to repair a $250 netbook for free isn't exactly a smart business move.

Also, Apple's warranty covers accidental damage? It includes on-site service? Maybe LoJack protection? Can it be extended to 4 years?

On a Dell Windows would be pre-installed. You said you weren't sure if it was a "Windows issue" that the person you knew had to service his computer multiple times. My point was if it was a "Windows issue" a single reformat would have needed meaning it was likely a hardware issue.

That comparable Mac

iMac
27" Display
Quad core i7
8Gbs of DDR3 RAM
1Tb HDD
Touch Sensitive mouse
Wireless Keyboard
1Tb HDD
Pre installed Movie editing software
Pre installed Photo editing software

If you haven't figured it out, there is no hardware comparison, software comparison, or reliability comparison.
