Late November 2009, saw a gathering of Balintawak legends at Cebu City, Philippines. The descendent's of the world's best known schools of Eskrima were well represented: Teovel, Nicklestick, Lapunti, and Balintawak. Notably absent only in the mix is GM Ising Atillo and anyone from the Bacon family.

Included in these group is GM Eduardo Ceniza of Baraw Sugbo and GM Bobby Taboada, who is already based in the United States. It was a rare gathering of masters.

After a few days, I was a guest of GM Ising Atillo at Dan Inosanto's martial arts academy. It was my turn to meet GM Bobby Taboada, it was a very interesting meeting, a few days earlier he was at my hometown of Cebu, having drinks with my teacher, GM Eduardo Ceniza, and now I too got the opportunity to meet GM Bobby Taboada.

GM Bobby Taboada, during the December 13, 2009, taught at the "Three Treasures of Balintawak" seminar. He demonstrated a very impressive move, where he was able to deliver a deadly strike at an attacking stick wielding partner. Then he asked, "why do you think this move would not work in real life?" Then he answered his own question, "This will not work, because the attack does not stop".

GM Bobby Taboada hit the nail right on the head. The classic 1-2-3 moves for disarming a stick or knife attacker simply does not work. The attacker would always try to protect his weapon, by countering and by using his empty hand to enforce his will.

Baraw Sugbo and Balintawak training takes into account this reality, so one attack flows to the next one, and defenses and disarms are constantly applied and reapplied until you can disarm or immobilize the attacker.
