K7NS builds a very simple 80 meter cw qrp transmitter made out of a homemade zinc negative resistance diode. This simple radio transmitter is made without using any vacuum tubes or transistors, and can be heard several miles away.

Thanks to W9RAN for his contribution of using a quarts crystal in place of an LC circuit.

  • seems like pitch is not stabilized. A regulating capacitor might help to give you a solid 'long' instead of the dropping swoop that's happening.

  • Considering the very crude, basic and unusual processes used to build this transmitter, the pitch stability is extremely good.

  • I bet with addition of microphone and 1 amplifying transistor for it, you can transmit voice and stuff.

  • You are right. Check out the video "Radio Transmitter Made Out Of Junk" This guy made an identical circuit broadcast music to a receiver.

  • very nice.. thanks for the video. like your website too.. was looking at doing your 'easy ten' transmitter do you know if it would work in the uk?

  • Stone Knives and Bear Skins! Excellent creation.

  • IS there any way to make the zinc strip into the crystal ocillator at all? that would be impressive! just 2 pieces of burned metal and have a radio transmitter lol. great work, really like the mini oscilloscopes

  • I would love to make my copy of this project work. All I'm getting right now are clicks / interference when I use the key, no tone per se. I'm guessing either my zinc strip is no good, or my crystal is blown. (I bought it at a hamfest, but...) How could I check if my crystal is OK? Any suggestions?

  • can I use 10K Slide variable resistor instead of 25K pot and call phone charger instead of batteries???

  • Really amazing, what is the RF power output of this oscillator? Must be at least a hundred miliwatts or so to travel 5 miles.

  • and with a carbon microphone, we have AM?

  • galvanized sheet metal :)

It also works with iron pyrite

  • I want to try this myself
