The Siemens Ultra High Voltage DC System is the latest developed system with a new dimension of efficiency in HVDC transmission.
(The Siemens Ultra High Voltage DC System is a newly developed system that ensures increased performance and robustness of the transmission grid during periods of steadily growing energy demand.) It provides a single bipole power transmission capacity of more than seven GW at a voltage of ± 800 kV, while reducing transmission losses by 60 percent compared with standard ± 500 kV HVDC. • How do you step down 800kV?

With ac you can just feed it in a transformer, but DC?

What kind of silicon do you use to switch 800kV......

  • @Daedronus: Hello, thanks for your comment. On our official website - siemens.com/energy/hvdc - you can find more information.

  • @Daedronus you use large thyristor stacks to switch to and fro 3 phase to DC.

Only 3 phase can be transformed though.

  • @sonconmas it's converted to DC for transmission purposes. Vancouver Island in Canada is supplied by HVDC lines.

  • Has Siemens considered Nicola Tesla's Wireless Power Transmission concept? If it's viable, you could do away with the pylons and the thousand of kilometers of copper!

  • It's still a grid system. :-( Bring on Tesla wireless. :-p

  • @Daedronus by the help of converter transformer which has capacity to transform hvac above 700 kv after its been inverted to ac with the help of thyrister valves converting in both possible ways i.e. ac to dc or vice versa

  • I'm having trouble understanding the schematic at 2:46. I see three in and three out. I don't see where the + & - 800KV (two legs, not three) come in, and the three phase comes out. Can you provide a sketch for that? Thank you.

  • Wow! What is mains DC used for anyway, or is it just converted to DC for transmission purposes?

  • @Daedronus PWM in to a large L C circuit yealds decent AC that will step down. Kinda like your ups for a computer. Also the more transformers and lines it goes over before hitting a house the more clean of a AC waveform it will be.

  • i think that we can step down DC voltage using power electronics.

  • @Daedronus You cant just feed something to just any transformer. You have to find out if its friendly first, Not all of them likes us humans. Some of them wants to kill us.
