billy eckstein was a master balladeer. his version of this song IS a classic. although each generation thinks their music is the best, all students of music will pay homage to those whose work has paved a way. Mr. b is one of the masters. find it.

@joeasmythe The young Jarreau does a lovely job here. But I agree with you about Eckstine's version. For me, his and Tony Bennett's are the two best renditions of this great song:) --

Al Jarreau's incredible range and dynamics does great justice to this lovely song. I also love Blossom Dearie's soft version of this song. It's on Utube.check it out!

I can't seem to find Billy Eckstine's version of this song (Dying of curiosity now, thanks!)... But I have been giving a listen to the many artists that have attempted this, and I'm am STILL in love with the young Al Jarreau here... His voice just floats like it was made to be the ONE and only person to hit near-perfection! Someday I *will* hear Billy Eckstine's version, but I just don't know how it could possibly be better... :)

Great memories of Billy Eckstine in a smoky Angelo's in the Village back in the 40's. He did S. Lady 3-4 times a night for us college kids who worshipped him and the era. (and this great song)
