FACING PANCREATIC CANCER

Prominent Oncologist and Fearless Pancreatic Cancer Patient Offer Inspiration in Recognition of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

Until the recent spike of high-profile pancreatic cancer cases among luminaries, such as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and actor Patrick Swayze, the disease received little media attention. Yet, the latest report from the American Cancer Society suggests a compelling reason to take notice. In the U.S., the number of pancreatic cancer diagnoses and deaths continues to rise notably each year. Of those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, only one in four survives one year and one in twenty lives for five years.

Despite this discouraging news, advances in pancreatic cancer treatments are helping some patients live longer with this disease. These patients are spreading hope by beating the odds and demonstrating that life continues in the face of advanced cancer.

As Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month approaches this November, interview an acclaimed oncologist and an inspiring pancreatic cancer patient. Diagnosed nine months ago with advanced stage disease, Elaine Gardner continues to serve as a non-denominational preacher, actively exercise, attend car shows and ride Harleys with her husband. Elaine cherishes the time she spends with her two grown daughters and looks forward to returning to work full-time this month.
