It's always beautiful sumo when these two are at it :D
-
@JohnLeeMD There is a timekeeper to the centre-left who signals to the referee when the prep time is up. He then stands with the gunbai (fan) facing forward to signal this. Technically they can start any time before that ('jikan-mae' or 'before time') but it rarely happens - only with a few guys who are known for it.
The salt (purification), stomping (to drive away demons), and spreading arms to show they're unarmed all derives from shinto ritual or tradition but it's also like a psych-out.
-
Can someone explain why they do the whole get ready, and grab salt, get ready, grab salt... is it just for build-up of the fight? Is it all planned (the number of times they're supposed to do it), or do they sometimes go on the first try? (I can tell when they are going by how the referee stands.)
