A standing room only crowd gathered to watch Mayor Vincent Gray, President Allen Sessoms and a host of city leaders and University of the District of Columbia supporters break ground for a brand new, state-of-the-art student center. The facility, funded in part with a $35 million dollar appropriation by the city council in 2009, will become the iconic face of Washington's only public university for years to come. Joining Mayor Gray on the dais were Council Chair Kwame Brown and Council Members Mary Cheh and Michael Brown. Board of Trustees Chairman Joseph Askew, Jr. spoke on behalf of trustees in attendance, including Mary Thompson, Reginald Felton and Jerome Shelton. The student center will sit on the northwest corner of Connecticut Ave. and Van Ness. It will give students, at long last, a place of their own to pursue their academic interests. When complete, sometime before the Spring 2013 semester, it will be the first LEED Platinum student center in the nation, and will provide the ultimate statement on the university's commitment to urban sustainability.
