Fan version of the song "The Hanging Tree" from the novel Mockingjay -- melody, arrangement, and vocals by me. :)

================================

[[ NOTES: ]]

Happy late Thanksgiving, everyone! How was your week? I spent mine eating lots and reading through The Hunger Games and the two other novels that follow it... I'm absolutely obsessed. (Peeta Mellark, anyone?!)

"The Hanging Tree" appears in the final novel in the series, as a haunting song that Katniss sings for the mockingjays. I know there are already popular versions of this floating around, but when I first read these lyrics, I couldn't shake the melody that immediately popped into my head — I had to arrange and record it! I tried to give it as accurate of a mood as I could and play around with the mockingjay harmonies that Katniss mentions, so I hope you enjoy it. It was so much fun to work on! ♥ :)

This is a first for me — I usually add lyrics to existing melodies and not the other way around, so if this sounds kind of weird, I apologize haha! It's a fairly disturbing song (as is its context in the novel) but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. Thanks for listening! :)

[[ LYRICS: ]]

Are you, are you

Coming to the tree

Where they strung up a man they say murdered three?
Strange things did happen here

No stranger would it seem

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

Are you, are you

Coming to the tree
Where the dead man called out for his love to flee?
Strange things did happen here

No stranger would it seem

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

Are you, are you

Coming to the tree
Where I told you to run, so we'd both be free?
Strange things did happen here

No stranger would it seem

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

Are you, are you

Coming to the tree

Wear a necklace of rope, side by side with me...
Strange things did happen here

No stranger would it seem

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

  • @SimplyHXCAaron Wow thank you so much for your enthusiasm!

To say that getting this version into the movie is probably very unlikely would be a gross understatement, but how cool would it be if Lionsgate or Suzanne Collins actually got to listen to it?! If anyone knows of a way to make that happen, I'm definitely all ears haha! :)

In the meantime, thank you so very much to EVERYONE who has commented or shared this with others! I'm so happy to hear that people have enjoyed it! ♥
