Chapter 31

[Joes POV]

When I asked Nick and Kevin to leave, I half expected Nick to refuse. So I was pretty surprised when he got up, gave me a hug, and quietly left. That was unexpected

I focused my attention back to Shaea. I walked up to her and sat on the chair next to her bed. It was warm from other people sitting on it.

I joked, Hey Shaea, this chairs warm. What do you think Kevin did on this? I chuckled to myself, half hoping she would laugh, too. But her quietness made me shut up. I took her hand in two of mine and held it up to my face. I lightly kissed it, a tear falling.

Sh-Shaea, Im so, so sorry. I-I should have been there for you like you are for me. Im such a bad friend, I didnt help you when you needed me the most. You kept everything inside yourself while Id rant about stupid stuff. Never once did I stop and ask you how you were doing. Im so sorry. Im the reason youre here, arent I? Come on Shaea, talk to me. Dont be so quiet; dont be so cold. Im sorry- what, are you giving me the silent treatment? Well, two can play at that game! I know I was being childish, but I was trying to get her back. I huffed, crossed my arms and turned my back to her. For five minutes I stayed that still hoping like an idiot that shed put her hand on my shoulder and say Its okay Joe,. But no such luck.

I turned back to her, pleading once again. Shaea, come on. I need you-

We all need you honey, my mom said from behind me. I turned, surprised to see my whole family, even Joanna standing there. Mom came and sat on the second seat next to me and put her hand around my shoulder. Frankie then came running into the room.

Hows Shaea? Is she all right? Mom, who did this to her? Mom!? What are you ignoring me now! I THINK I HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW; SHES MY SISTER TOO! God, you guys always hog her! he ranted.

Shh, little guy, keep it quiet. Whend you get here anyways? I asked him.

Aunt Rachel [AN: Made up aunt] just dropped me. I threw a tantrum, he said proudly, smiling at me. He knew that only Id be one to support his behavior.

Frankie! You call and tell her youre sorry, young man! And we need to have a talk about throwing tantrums! mom said disappointedly.

Oh, come ON mom! You think Id wait till the AFTERNOON to see her? Psh anyways, now its my turn with her. I smiled, Frankie always knew how to ease the mood.
He came and sat next to Shaea on the bed. He took her hand and lightly played with her fingers. She looked so fragile, I was afraid hed break them by mistake.

Hiya Shaea, whats wrong with you, huh? Never seemed so weak and suddenly in a hospital bed. Isnt that a little out of character for supergirl? Frankies way of talking to Shaea was shocking. It wasnt rude, but it was surprising how he was able to say something out loud that we were afraid to admit to even ourselves. The fact that the strongest girl we know, or in Frankies case Supergirl was showing such weakness.

Shaeaaaaaa, you have to wake up! Ugh, come on! Look at everyone; they want you back!! Joe looks like his CAT died, hes that sad! he chuckled.

Frankie, I dont have a cat, I stated confused.

Duh, I know that, but if you did, youd look like this when she gets run over, he said matter-of-factly. Sometimes, I fail to understand this kid. And to think the world thinks Im random

Well, anyways, he continued. Yea, and look at Nick, hes so sad, he cant write a SONG and Nick can write songs anytime, even when hes spreading butter on toast or, then, he dramatically covered the side of his mouth and loudly whispered, when hes pooping!

FRANKIE! I do NOT do that! Nick said, embarrassed. Frankie sure was chirpy today.

Sure you dont, Nick. And mom wants you back. If you get up now, shell make cookies for us! And we wont share it with ANYONE, okay? Not even Kevin or Joe. He sat there, thinking quietly for a few minutes, staring at her face and petting her hand. Then he turned at look at us and said in a quiet voice,

Shes really pretty, isnt she? We all just nodded, still not over Frankies actions. Wow, even though hes acting all kiddy-like, he seems more mature than the rest of us, not shedding tears like Shaeas dead but merely fainted.

He turned back to her. Shaeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, he stretched. Get up! Okay, if you dont wake up now, Shaea, I wont talk to you. Ever. Got it? Fine, be that way, Im going-
